Everyone has different upbringings, which is why it’s important to never judge a book by its cover. This also applies to animals, as many of them can feel the same emotions that humans do.
Take Shay the horse, for example.
A Neglected Life
The 19-year-old animal has been through a lot in her lifetime. The poor horse had been neglected by her previous owners, to the point where it seemed like she didn’t want to live.
She was constantly left on her own in their field, going long periods of time without being fed. Things weren’t looking good for Shay.
That is, until Dani came into the picture.
The Affection They Both Needed
Dani also knows what it’s like to struggle, as certain traumatic events in her childhood led to her having borderline personality disorder.
When Dani first met Shay, the horse wasn’t too social, as she was hiding behind a hay bale. Despite this, the woman knew they were meant to be.
But she knew it would be a challenge to connect to the horse from the start. “She was very, kind of, closed off,” Dani told The Dodo. “She was afraid to go anywhere.”
Over time, Dani was able to earn the horse’s trust; at one point, Shay went over to the woman and put her head in Dani’s hands, as if she was asking her to help her.
And that’s exactly what Dani did.
A Change for Both
Dani started to care for the horse, giving her affection at every turn, feeding her, and grooming her.
Not only was Dani able to help Shay out of her rut, but her connection with the horse helped Dani overcome her own issues.
“I think that we did both come into each other’s lives at just the right time,” Dani said.
The way Dani sees it, if Shay could go from being anti-social towards humans to being a very affectionate horse, then she can change for the better as well.
The two even have their own Instagram page, which currently has nearly 8,000 followers. The page shows what is probably just a fraction of all the time the two spend together.
Reunited at last ❤ she was as happy to see me as I was to see her! She waddled over, stuck her head on my shoulder and stood there for what felt like forever ❤ when I groomed her, she kept turning around and nuzzling me with her nose, almost to make sure it was really me and I was really there ❤ #ilovemyhorse #whorescuedwho #imnotmewithoutyou #loveofmylife #soulmate #standardbred #standie
Dani’s and Shay’s stories both prove you can’t judge a book by its cover, and that everything happens for a reason. These two found each other at just the right time to change each other’s lives for the better.
